Three thicknesses, and what they weigh

The numbers that decide your wall, your fixings and whether one person can carry it.

Ceramic artwork here is made on 3, 6 or 9 mm tile. A bare panel weighs roughly 7.2, 14.4 or 21.6 kg per square metre at those thicknesses, so a 1200 × 2400 mm piece is about 20.7, 41.5 or 62.2 kg before any coating, frame or backing. Any thickness can be framed and hung; 9 mm panels can also be fixed with tile adhesive.

3, 6 and 9 mm

Three options. Which suits a piece depends on size, effect and how it goes on the wall.

3 mm

The lightest option. Thin does not mean it can be hung anywhere — support is configured to the size of the piece, and thickness on its own does not decide it.

7.2 kg/m² bare

6 mm

A middle option. Framing and installation are specified per product rather than assumed from the thickness.

14.4 kg/m² bare

9 mm

The heaviest of the three. It can be framed and hung like the others, or fixed with tile adhesive as a mural or feature wall — fixed that way it follows tiling practice and needs no frame.

21.6 kg/m² bare

Weight by size and thickness

Calculated, not weighed — the assumption is stated so you can check it.

  • The ink layers that build the relief
  • Decorative frame and rear support
  • Backing board and fixings
  • Packaging
  • Tile adhesive, where a 9 mm panel is fixed to the wall

Bare-tile reference weight, calculated at an assumed density of 2400 kg/m³. Frame, backing, fixings and packaging are additional, and a 9 mm panel fixed with tile adhesive also carries the weight of the adhesive. Finished pieces are weighed to their actual configuration. Treat the figure as the tile alone, before the ink relief, frame or backing is added to it.

Four measurements, kept separate

Conflating them is the most common reason an installation goes wrong.

Panel thickness

3, 6 or 9 mm. The tile itself.

Relief height

How far the worked surface stands above or below the panel face.

Adhesive layer

Applies when a 9 mm panel is fixed with tile adhesive, and adds to the finished depth.

Finished total

Panel plus surface work plus frame and backing. The figure your wall actually deals with.

We do not publish relief depth figures. Depth varies with the effect, the image and the piece, and a single number quoted out of context would be worth less than nothing to you. What we do confirm is the finished total thickness and weight for the configuration you order.

Questions about size and weight

How much does a ceramic art panel weigh?

A bare panel is about 7.2 kg per square metre at 3 mm, 14.4 kg at 6 mm and 21.6 kg at 9 mm. So a 600 × 900 mm piece runs roughly 3.9–11.7 kg depending on thickness, and a 1200 × 2400 mm piece roughly 20.7–62.2 kg. Those are calculated figures for the panel alone — coating, frame, backing board and fixings all add to it, and a finished piece is weighed to its actual configuration.

How is the weight calculated?

area (m²) × thickness (mm) × 2.4, using an assumed density of 2400 kg/m³. So a 600 × 900 mm at 6 mm panel is 0.6 × 0.9 × 14.4 ≈ 7.8 kg. We publish the assumption rather than a bare number so you can check it against your own material data. In other units that is 1.44 g/cm² at 6 mm. It is a planning estimate, not a weighbridge figure.

What thicknesses can I choose?

Three: 3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm. Which one suits a piece depends on its size, the effect and how it will be installed. Thickness is not the same as relief depth, and neither is the same as the total thickness of a finished framed piece — we keep those three figures separate because conflating them is how installation goes wrong.

What is the largest size you can make?

Tell us the size you need and we will confirm what is available for that image, effect and installation. We do not publish a maximum, because the usable image area depends on the artwork and the process chain rather than on the raw sheet size — quoting a number from a slab catalogue would be misleading.

Does the panel thickness tell me how deep the relief is?

No, and it is worth separating them. Panel thickness, relief height, adhesive layer and the total thickness of a framed piece are four different measurements. The one that matters for your wall is the finished total, and that is confirmed with the configuration for your order.
